How to Choose the Right Home Care Provider

15 Questions to Ask:

  1. How long has the provider been in business?

  2. How comprehensive is this provider (for example, do they also have short term care, long stay care, rehabilitation should I need those later)?

  3. Does the home care provider have national accreditations?

  4. What types of services does the provider offer (for example, nursing, physical therapy, home health aides)?

  5. Is the provider willing to share patient survey results?

  6. How are the caregivers evaluated prior to hiring, regarding qualifications, training, certifications and experience?

  7. Are the caregivers insured?

  8. Are there enough caregivers on staff to ensure continuous care?

  9. Does the provider include the patient, family members and patient’s doctor when developing the plan of care?

  10. Is a home visit conducted before starting the home care service?

  11. Is there a wait for services to begin, or can services begin immediately?

  12. How are the caregivers supervised to be sure proper care is given?

  13. Are there backup caregivers in case the primary caregiver is unavailable?

  14. Does the provider offer overnight and/or 24-hour care?

  15. What are the financial procedures of this provider?
