The Benefits of Therapeutic Touch
Therapeutic touch is a therapy that is believed to restore balance throughout the body, in order to promote healing.
During therapeutic touch therapy, our Holistic Therapy Practitioner focuses on the “Whole Self” to help restore the patient as fully as possible.
This therapy can be used to reduce anxiety and pain, and bring relaxation to the body –helping to promote healing. It can also be used for a number of other issues and concerns.
Reduce Pain and Anxiety – Some professionals believe that touch therapy can help combat anxiety, providing a positive impact on the patient’s overall physical health as well.
Induce Relaxation – Touch therapy can help the patient to arrive at a state of deep relaxation.
Offer Benefits for Dementia Patients – Studies suggest that touch therapy may benefit people with dementia. In some cases it can help to reduce screaming or shouting behaviors, anxiety, and aggression.
Strengthen Overall Physical and Mental Well-being – Some people who receive therapeutic touch report having a refreshed spirit, healing faster, and feeling better.
Provide Pain Relief and Ease Discomfort – While not a cure in and of itself, in some cases therapeutic touch can help to relieve pain.
Stimulate the Body’s Healing – In some cases it may help the patient to heal faster.
It’s important to note that while therapeutic touch is safe, and can be beneficial, it should not be used in place of medical treatment, or used as an attempt to cure the disease or ailment. Instead, this therapy is most beneficial when used with other therapies such as massage and acupressure as a way to help stimulate the body’s own natural healing abilities. CAM therapies work with traditional western medicines to help with healing the patient.
At The Cedars, we offer our long-stay and short-stay patients and residents the wonderful benefits of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) or holistic therapies, including therapeutic touch. These therapies work alongside traditional Western medicine and focus on helping to restore the patient as fully as possible.
